Victoria & Albert Museum

Ward Signs has recently completed a new range of signage for new client Victoria & Albert Museum in London

As stated on V&A’s website, “The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art and design, housing a permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects that span over 5,000 years of human creativity. The Museum holds many of the UK’s national collections and houses some of the greatest resources for the study of architecture, furniture, fashion, textiles, photography, sculpture, painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, book arts, Asian art and design, theatre and performance.” All of this is done at their wonderful site in London, where the museum had a unique need for lettering produced in non-patinated bronze.

At the outset of the job, V&A approached Ward Signs after not being able to find an adequate solution for their signage needs from other companies. Wards were able to adapt to the problem at hand and come up with a bespoke product that fulfilled their ideas. The result was lettering that was both elegant and practical.

Founded in 1852, V&A have a wealth of exhibits that are rich in heritage. One such example of this is the Raphael Cartoons, and are extremely valuable as they are on loan from Her Majesty The Queen. Naturally, such an exhibit required signage of a similar standard, therefore making sure to use a sign manufacturer with a wealth of experience and up to the task of making such types of signage was an important consideration for V&A.

While historically in the sign making industry cast bronze was a commonly preferred material, today with the raw-material cost being so high, bronze as a medium is not so commonplace. That is why grand and historic heritage buildings that have withstood the sands of time usually will have bronze lettering on them. Because of this, when choosing signage for banks, museums, theatres, pubs and other classic buildings such as V&A Museum, Cast Bronze lettering is the preferred choice. As Ward Signs have a wide range of experience, they can produce signage in many different materials to suit every budget and any requirement.

Fast, Courteous and Well-priced

I commissioned Wards of Bristol to produce a bronze memorial plaque, which featured the intricate engraving of a scarce butterfly. The resulting work is beautiful and has completely surpassed my expectations.

The service received was also fast, courteous and well-priced, and I would gladly recommend Wards to anyone I know.
